The best goal of 2010

The first of many ‘the best of 2010’ articles. Link to some great goals inside...

Given events over the past couple of weeks, visiting FIFA.com, or indeed endorsing anything to do with the evil monolithic, ‘Orwellianesque’ organisation that runs the world game is not really something any self respecting football blogger (at least one not from Qatar) should be doing...however, football at heart is not meant to be about politics and corruption, World Cup bids and men in suits, but instead goals; that, I think, is something we can all agree on.

And so, with that in mind please find the following from FIFA’s propaganda...sorry website encouraging you to vote on the delightfully titled ‘Puskas Award’, which in homage to one of the world’s greatest ever goal getters rewards that player who has contributed the very best goal of the past 12 months (albeit one where camera’s were present, otherwise Joey ‘The Don’ Hancock’s for Wandsworth Athletic against FC Storalona on the 9th December would surely have been a contender).

So, if you follow the link at the bottom of the article, you will get to see each of the goals in all their entirety and vote on the outcome. From the Altintop smashed volley to the exquisite dribbling of Messi and Nasri all the way through to the improvisation of, yes, you read this correctly, Matthew Burrows of Glentoran, it’s up to you which you want to make your favourite. Failing that, it’s an excuse to go and watch some great goals, which even the most jaded follower of the beautiful game must surely be able to appreciate.

This author’s personal favourite? Hmm, as with quite a lot of prizes, it might have to be Messi’s but then again I think Linus Hallenius’ ‘flick up into a Van Basten’ takes some beating.
Voting closes on the 13th December, so why not inject some much needed democracy into FIFA and have your say!

Voting for the 2010 FIFA Puskas Award closes at midday (CET) on Monday 13 December, leaving FIFA.com users with just a few days to choose their favourite strike of the year.
There are ten fantastic goals to watch and vote for, with Hamit Altintop, Matthew Burrows, Linus Hallenius, Lionel Messi, Samir Nasri, Neymar, Arjen Robben, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Kumi Yokoyama the scorers in question.

The winning goalscorer will collect the prestigious trophy at the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala in Zurich on 10 January 2011. Over a million votes have already been cast, dwarfing last year’s total of 120,000. And that figure is sure to rise even higher over the next few days before voting closes next Monday.

So, if you have not already voted for your goal of the year, then make sure you log on at FIFA.com in the next few days and click on the wondergoal of your choice.

  1. That Hallenius' goal (is it ignorant to say I don't who he is?) is absolutely outrageous. It's frankly obscene. Sorry Matthew Burrows, but that gets my vote.
