Wandsworth Athletic – An Update

What’s happened to the two-times champions…

Ardent followers of Wandsworth Athletic might be wondering just what’s going on at the South-West London club, with official updates few and far between.

Rest assured, the club remains as strong as ever, although an unfortunate injury crisis has caused its fair share of problems.

Following June’s second title success, Wandsworth experienced a mixed campaign next time out. Injuries ravaged the squad, and at times Wandsworth were forced to field a young and inexperienced side. All things considered, a final league position of third was a respectable effort. In particular, leading appearances makers Matt Snelling, Alex Platt and Ben Lewis must be commended for their consistent performances.

With injuries and player unavailability at an all-time high, the club’s management team were forced to make a painful decision earlier this month, pulling the team out of playing duty for the following campaign. Andy Michel (knee), Sasan Molaie (shoulder) and Tim Rickard (metatarsal) are just some of the names absent through injury, while Ricky Tavares, Pete Thorn, Alex Platt, Zaid Shoubber, David Lloyd and Misha Mantel are all unavailable due to external commitments.

Nonetheless, the club is confident of making an emphatic return to playing action in mid-November. The recent summer tour to Mallorca underlined the talent and optimism still present within the squad, and local onlookers were said to be impressed by the standard of Wandsworth’s training sessions at the excellent Mallorcan facilities.

Amber, 20, commented: “It looked like Wandsworth were dominating that training pitch.”

Further updates to follow.
