Wandsworth Athletic 20 - 4 Rotherwood Rovers

Wandsworth Athletic banish the memory of last week’s traumatic draw with an emphatic victory

Wandsworth Athletic would have expected to surpass their Irish opposition in this tie, but to win by a 16 goal margin was highly impressive. Missing the irrepressible Michel, plus flamboyant forward David Lloyd, Wandsworth welcomed back their Portuguese playmaker Ricky Tavares following an extended period on the sidelines. It was a noticeable boost, and Tavares swiftly found his feet, eventually finding the net four times. There were others who performed admirably too, particularly Pete Thorn, who combined a delicate touch and deadly finishing with his customary brand of force and vigour. Thorn was involved in much of Wandsworth’s delightful attacking interplay, as the team in white put aside a hesitant start and began a masterclass of pretty yet purposeful passing.

At times the football was a joy to behold, with Wandsworth making a mockery of respectable players from across the Irish Sea. Almost inevitably, the majority of the team filled their boots; Platt struck on seven occasions, whilst Thorn added four, Rickard three and Molaie two. The pick of the lot was a flowing counter-attacking move, with Thorn and Platt combining rapidly in midfield, before Rickard was able to tee up the onrushing Thorn for a precise finish. It was wonderful to watch.

Tougher tests lie ahead as the business end of the season approaches. Such a comprehensive victory will give everyone confidence though. After the game, the entire Wandsworth Athletic squad dedicated this impressive win to Andy Michel, who nobly hustled the team with typical energy from the sidelines.
