Wandsworth Athletic 16 - 4 Paul McGrath's Magicians

Back on form...

Wandsworth Athletic returned to winning ways with an emphatic victory here, putting 16 goals past demoralised Midlands opposition. It was not a totally polished display by any means, but there was enough exciting forward movement to provide a silky shine.

For reasons which the management team remain unable to fathom, Wandsworth again started slowly – lacklustre, flat and hushed, McGrath’s sensed an unlikely upset and quickly gained confidence. They took the lead too, thanks to Wandsworth’s initial penchant for giving possession away cheaply. The team in white rallied though, and quickly slipped into their preferred modus operandi – slick passing, rapid interchanges, powerful finishing.

It was from the least likely source that Wandsworth secured the all important equaliser however. Some bookmakers were reportedly offering 20,000-1 on Lewis for first scorer. Any fanciful punters who dared a flutter beforehand will have exploded with delirium when Lewis calmly slotted home after 10 minutes. Pay-out time, and the long drought was over.

Wandsworth then steadily began picking apart an increasingly beleaguered adversary, with most of the squad helping themselves. Michel ended a recent barren spell of his own (by the striker’s lofty standards) to notch six times, whilst Platt added five, Rickard two and Lloyd one. Lewis also doubled his tally with another crisp finish, and he’ll surely be hoping that this marks the start of a more unreserved run in front of goal.

McGrath’s valiantly battled all the way to the end, but there was little on offer other than a consolation strike or two. Wandsworth, the opening period aside, will be pleased with their display, no more so than their number three. The Engine has been fully serviced, and is back firing on all cylinders.
