Wandsworth Athletic 14 - 7 Olympic Waterloo

Another win against the blue and blacks - this week's match report

This was a rather mixed performance from Wandsworth Athletic, but crucially the side maintained its fine winning run, securing three more valuable points. The requisite conditions (foul, with persistent rain) for an encounter with Waterloo were present, and this appeared to provoke a performance of extremes from the team in white; flowing, unrestrained attacking football one moment, clumsy, careless defending the next.

The match commenced in ragged fashion, neither side able to fathom decent openings. Waterloo were on top though, and it came as no surprise when they eventually took the lead. An early blow for Wandsworth, but in the fashion of a true heavyweight great, they hauled themselves off the canvas and slowly began landing meaningful blows of their own. Steadily, a grip on the game was grasped, and Wandsworth muscled their way into a 4-1 lead thanks to strikes from Michel, Rickard, J.Platt and Molaie. Waterloo kept nagging away though, and Wandsworth generously let their guard down regularly, always allowing a glimmer of hope to the opposition without truly looking in danger.

At 7-3 the points seemed safe. Then it was 7-4. At 8-4, the win again appeared to be secure. Then in was 8-5. This frustrating pattern of scoring continued until, in the business end of the contest, Wandsworth eventually pulled away. As revealed formerly, the football at times was a joy to behold. Darting runs, first time passes, shimmies, dummies, and precise shooting. J.Platt helped himself to five goals, whilst Molaie notched an impressive four times, the pick of these being a powerful drive from the centre of the pitch. It ended 14-7. A comfortable victory eventually, and merited too.

Wandsworth can play better. Wandsworth will play better. Yet given the conditions and a vastly improved opponent, this remained an impressive, if occasionally flawed, performance. And the facts don’t often lie; 14 scored, a seven goal winning margin, three more points and an eleventh win from the last twelve. It could certainly be a lot worse.
