Wandsworth Athletic - Update

The season ends with highs and lows

Wandsworth Athletic experienced mixed emotions at the end of their Spring campaign, losing twice before coming back with a strong performance in their final fixture, dashing BRNO Athletic’s hopes of an unbeaten season.

A fractious, irritable match against The Number 4 Kings ultimately ended in disappointing defeat. Wandsworth unfortunately allowed themselves to be riled by the most abhorrent player in the league, a vile excuse for a human being. Becoming irate by this foul individual is understandable, but sadly his devious approach allowed Kings to take the three points. This was followed by a lacklustre performance against Magic Monkeys FC. The game was relatively tight, but Wandsworth never really looked liked a side who believed they could win, and the match ended 8-5.

A huge number of positives could be taken from the final fixture of the season though, as Wandsworth produced a superb display of character and ability, securing a 9-6 victory over a previously unbeaten side. The whole team contributed, as Wandsworth displayed their ability to defend powerfully and attack dangerously. The return of Tim Rickard was welcome, and he combined expertly with Alex Platt, Lewis and goalkeeper Snelling to marshal a resolute backline; BRNO’s number 2, their main source of attacking threat, became increasingly frustrated by Wandsworth’s tenacious and steadfast marking. Molaie provided an exceptional link between defence and attack as ever, whilst Tavares, James Platt and Lloyd were able to create numerous openings going forward. The victory was thoroughly merited, and Wandsworth will go into next season with renewed confidence, particularly with the return of Andy Michel imminent.
